Our History
The Parish of The Resurrection had its beginnings as far back as 1613. The first official structure and thus, record, is the construction of a church building in Burnt Head in the early 1800's. The Mission, as it was then called, went on to include Salmon Cove, Brigus and Juniper Stump (Makinsons).
In the fall of 1999, with dwindling numbers and resources, the parish began to seek ways to become more effective in doing ministry and mission. This process started with the pooling together of the human resources from the four separate points (South River, Makinsons, Burnt Head, Brigus). There was one main liturgical gathering on Sunday mornings, with one children's church and worship team that rotated through the buildings of the parish each Sunday morning. At the same time, the administration of the parish (vestry's and finances) began working as a single unit, and an adult Christian education program was initiated. Over time, the gathered people of God came to identify with the eucharistic community instead of with the various buildings. After three years of community building, the parish asked the diocese to make legal what it had already become. And in February 2003, the four point parish of Brigus-South River officially became the Parish of the Resurrection, with one congregation and one vestry. In the fall of 2003, this new congregation began the process of discerning how to "house" itself and meet new ministry objectives. In the fall of 2006, the parish moved into its "New House for the Church," seeking to develop the ministry principles of Hospitality, Mission and Liturgy. A diocesan document reflecting these "re-creating community" principles can be found here.
